Obesity Health Alliance calls for urgent overhaul of obesity treatment services in England

On October 16, 2024, the Obesity Health Alliance (OHA) will launch a new position statement calling for significant policy changes to improve obesity management services across England.

To support this initiative, the OHA is coordinating an open letter from healthcare professionals to Wes Streeting, the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, urging immediate action to adopt measures that will improve the delivery of weight management services.

The letter, which will be made public and shared with the media, highlights the need for tangible reforms to ensure equitable access to treatment for the millions of people living with obesity in England. The OHA's position statement is based on a comprehensive evidence review, outlining the critical need for improved obesity treatment services alongside robust preventative measures to curb the rise of obesity-related health conditions.

The OHA, a coalition of 60 leading health organisations, including charities and medical bodies, is advocating for a fully resourced, patient-centered system to support people living with obesity. The position statement condemns the stigmatisation of individuals with obesity and urges the government to ensure that future policies address both prevention and treatment without perpetuating harmful stereotypes.

A key aspect of the OHA’s position is tackling weight stigma, which often prevents individuals from seeking care. The report emphasises that stigma, both in society and within the healthcare system, must be challenged to create a supportive environment for people living with obesity. The OHA stresses the importance of including people with lived experience in policy development and ensuring that communications do not perpetuate harmful stereotypes.

The OHA urges Wes Streeting and the government to take immediate action, emphasising that addressing obesity-related health conditions is essential to reducing pressure on the NHS. The position statement calls for coordinated action from central government, NHS leadership, and healthcare professionals to expand treatment services, reduce health inequalities, and ensure that all individuals have access to the support they need.
