Body weight is controlled by the brain, consultant says
The brain plays an essential role in the development of obesity, according to a recognised researcher.
Dr Alexander Miras, Senior Clinical Lecture and Consultant in Endocrinology at Imperial College London, has revealed that genes in the upper part of the brain can determine your weight.
Speaking today at the first Obesity and Weight Management Alliance Conference in Birmingham, Dr Miras highlighted that the brain controls our hunger, fullness and energy levels.
He said: “Biology plays a major role in obesity. If we understand the biology, we can create some good treatments for the disease.
“We need to act on prevention to reduce the number of people developing the disease. We finally now have a bit of a better understanding of obesity by identifying the organ causing it.”
